Ceramic – Glass

Raw materials for Glass manufacturing:

Silica Sand other than playing a major role in glass manufacturing also is a most used raw material in foundry applications. Other minor applications include Ceramics, water filtration, fluidized-bed furnaces and chemical manufacture. Each of the above application demands specific properties from silica sand. We shall discuss the required properties in Silica for using it in Glass manufacturing process. The requirement for the Glass Grade Silica is set in BS2975:1988 British standards and cover the following applications

1.      Optical and ophthalmic Glass – Grade A

2.      Tableware and Lead Crystal Glass – Grade B

3.      Borosilicate Glass – Grade C

4.      Colourless Container Glass – Grade D

5.      Clear Flat Glass – Grade E

6.      Coloured Container Glass – Grade F

7.      Insulating Fibre Glass – Grade G

The BS2975 standard gives the detailed chemical and physical specifications required for each of the above mentioned grades.
