Raw materials for Glass manufacturing:
Having seen the basic raw materials used in the glass manufacturing, we shall see in detail the required characteristics of each of the raw material used for glass manufacturing. We shall discuss the essential properties of silica sand required for using in the glass industrial application. Silica Sand is small grains of mineral or rock fragments. Silica consists of high quantity of Quartz or Silicon dioxide along with very little quantity of feldspar, aluminium or iron bearing minerals. For using in glass industry, Silica sand should consists of large quantities of quartz. It is also important that the grains be of uniform size distribution with highly limited amount of other metallic elements. Silica Sand is generally formed from both unconsolidated sands and crushed sand stones. Silica Sand is found in most non tropical regions of the world. One point to note is that, this material is highly hazardous to health. Inhaling this fine dust can lead to diseases like silicosis, Bronchitis and Lung cancer, as this material is not dissolvable.
