Indian China Clay

Clay for Manufacturing Refractory Bricks:

One another application usage of Clay is the manufacturing of refractory bricks…. Any idea on how these are made??? We shall discuss the same in the coming blogs… Fire Clay Bricks are the largest type of bricks used in industrial refractory’s. Research works are being carried out extensively to see if Kaolin group of clay can be used for manufacturing fire clay bricks.

Refractory bricks are produced using Grog. Grog is nothing but burned clay. Grog consists of calcined Kaolinite,  calcined kayanite, calcined bauxite or other suitable non plastic high temperature material. Grogs are used in refractory bricks to reduce the drying and firing shrinkage and  thereby allows the bricks to dry quickly without deformation or damages. The clay used for refractory brick manufacturing has to be free from fluxes such as large quantities of impurities like Iron, hydroxides and excess silica. But the property of clay mainly depends upon the 2 building block elements of clay Silica SiO2 and Alumina Al2O3.
