Alumina Powder Preparation - Different Milling Effects

The particle size distribution studied source that powders ground in the stirred media mills are the same in the range of the measurement accuracy, whereas the distribution curve of the vibration mill ground powder has shifted to much higher particle sizes. The SEM analysis of powder particles reveals that the product from the vibration mill gone through a weak grinding process in comparison with the stirred mill.

In the stirred mill the effectiveness of the grinding is very high due to intensive surface stress. During the grinding process the lattice properties of the powder is getting changed. This is due to the formation of lattice distortions and defects. The well preserved sub structure of the Vibro mill powder batch is established with large crystallite size and the low degree of lattice distortion. The more intensive stresses in the stirred media mills are responsible for the smaller primary crystallizes.
