A simple equation with which we can describe the grinding momentum is M x V (mass x velocity). This enables us to view how an attritor fits into the family of grinding mills. In conventional ball mills large size grinding media are used and its run at a very low rpm which ranges normally 10 to 50. In other type of mills smaller media are used which runs at a very high rpm ranges between 800 to 1200.
In attritor mill there are two types one is low rpm and the other is high rpm which is called high speed attritor. In normal attritor mill the media size used is in between 1/8 to 3/8 inch and runs at a rpm of 60 to 350. Where as high speed attritor the grinding media size is ranges between .5 to 3mm and runs at a speed of 320 to 1700 rpm.
The other important factor in grinding mills is the Tip Speed. In attritor this will be 600 to 1000 fpm where as in high speed attritor it will be 2500 to 3000.
