DRYING OF CLAY MATERIALS

Drying seems like a very simple process however it is not so, in reality it is more complex in nature. This is due to the capillary nature of clay bodies. Evaporation of water from the clay body is accompanied by a cooling effect. As long as there is water the clay feels cold however after drying out it is warm to the touch with fine capillary pores material. The drying takes place exclusively from the external surface and the speed of drying is directly proportional to the exposed surface per unit weight.

There is flow of water through the capillary network to the surfaces or edges from which drying takes place.
