It is very important for ceramics to find out the plasticity of clays with a numeric statement. However there are number of factors involved and their separate contributions are not known exactly. And hence there are lots of difficulties in the selection of a perfect method for the measurement of plasticity. There are accepted methods of investigation available which comprise the range of plasticity, workability and binding strength, however all this factors cannot be sharply differentiated.
The plastic range of clays has been worked out by Atterberg who worked up the clay with different amounts of water in a porcelain basin and separated that into two halves with a spatula.
