LABORATORY TESTS ON CLAY (..contd)

10. Test for permeability

The clay to be tested has to be taken out from the bulk supply by ‘Cone and Quarter’ method - the sample to be prepared is around 1 kg. From this master sample take out about 500 gms and soak it in distilled water about 250 ml. After soaking, stir it for few minutes and leave the sample overnight.

  • Stir the clay slurry uniformly and take out 250ml of the Clay slurry
  • Put it in a Baroid filter press and apply the pressure
  • Collect the filtrate in a measuring jar and express as filtrate collected within given standard time
  • Take out the formed cake, measure the thickness and green weight and express as clay formed within given time
  • Compare the results with other standard reference clays and correlate for its permeability
