LABORATORY TESTS ON CLAY

3. Test for drying shrinkage

The amount of shrinkage is a very important charcteristic of any clay especially in the slip casting process. The clay shrinks both at drying and firing. The drying stage shrinkage is called drying shrinkage and it is tested as linear shrinkage as follows.

  1. Prepare few bars of the following dimension i.e. 14 cms long, 4 cms wide and about 1 cm thick, from a well kneaded mass of clay.
  2. On the face of each bar, make a sharp mark exactly 10 cm long.
  3. Allow the bars to dry by turning it frequently to avoid wraping.
  4. Calculate the drying shrinkage by using the following formula.

% Drying Linear Shrinkage = ((Wet Length - Dry Length)/ Wet Length ) * 100
