The oil or gas well miners can be approached for necessary information. They normally do very deep drilling in the earth to find out oil or gas availability and hence they will have lot of information about materials available under the surface of earth.
Another source of help for identifying good clay resources are the state geologist who can do real help in locating good clay. Through out the world and in every region of a country extensive geological and mineral resource studies have been published which clearly indicates the presence of usable clay in various places.
When we locate some clay, the next step is to find out of what use it might be in ceramics. Many types of clay are not suitable for sanitaryware manufacturing. A clay which is contaminated with soluble alkalizes is not worth mining.
