SANITARYWARE RAW MATERIALS - secondary clay (..contd)

SECONDARY CLAY — BALL CLAY
The ball clay also belongs to the mineral kaolinite however it is a secondary type clay otherwise called as sedimentary type clay. The primary clay formed from its original location is transported by various natural transporting agents like river, wind, glaciers etc. to various locations and get sedimented and the properties both physical and chemical get changed from its original properties.

Ball clays are almost opposite of kaolin in their properties.
They are contaminated with higher iron content, more fusible, very high plastic and the particle size is very fine. Ball clays are said to have been so named because of the practice in England of forming damp clay in the mines into large balls which could be rolled upon to vagons for transport.
