SELECTION OF SANITARYWARE RAW MATERIALS (..contd)

Friday, June 20th, 2008

The clay thus formed on the earth’s crust across the world differs in quality characteristics based on:

the weathering process it went through
the basic mineral the rock contained
the climate condition differences of different geographical regions.

We wonder about this process and every geologist earnestly analyses the reasons behind it.
The clay in United States differs from the Clay […]

The clays used in Sanitaryware body are of two types:

Primary Clay (China Clay)
Secondary Clay (Ball Clay)

Both belong to Kaolinite mineral group. Hence these clays predominantly contain kaolinite as the major mineral with other impurities.
Primary Clay [China Clay] :
When granite is exposed to chemical process due to weathering, the minerals like Alkali Feldspar, Quartz, Plagio Clase […]

SELECTION OF SANITARYWARE RAW MATERIALS

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Sanitaryware came into existence few centuries ago. However the search for new and different raw materials for the production of sanitaryware is still continuing. Although many raw materials are established as standard ceramic sanitaryware raw materials having exclusive unique characteristics, the search is still on.
From the early days of invention, the basic process adapted for […]

Mould:
Next to Body and Glaze, Mould is the other important input for making sanitaryware. The following are the main raw materials used in preparing the mould:

Alpha Plaster
Beta Plaster
Resin
Rubber
Porous Resin
Releasing Agents like Soap, Kerosene and low fat oils.

For making the block, alpha plaster, resin and rubber are used. For making conventional working moulds beta plaster is […]

Glaze:
There are many varieties of raw materials available for making sanitaryware glaze. However the following are the major and most important raw materials commonly used in making sanitaryware glaze.

Feldspar
Nepheline
Quartz
Calcite
Dolomite
Wollastonite
Zircon
China Clay
Barium Carbonate
Talc
Tourmaline
Calcium Fluoride
Carboxy-methylated-cellulose
Colouring oxides

RAW MATERIALS USED FOR MANUFACTURING SANITARYWARE

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

There are ‘n’ number of raw materials used all over the world in sanitaryware manufacturing. However the basic raw materials can be grouped into few important categories. Sanitaryware needs three inputs as follows:

Body
Glaze
Mould

Body: In sanitaryware body, the following raw materials are mainly used:

Ball Clay
China Clay
Feldspar
Quartz
Nepheline
Pyrophylite
Talc
Additives like sodium silicate, soda ash, barium carbonate and dispex.

MORE ABOUT SANITARYWARE

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

Of all the ceramic materials invented by mankind, the building materials gained more importance because of its specific usage with plenty of advantages in day to day requirements of mankind. The most important building materials normally used across the world are:

Brick
Tiles
Sanitaryware

There are replacements for bricks and tiles wherein we can use either granite stone or […]

OTHER VARIETIES OF EARTHENWARE BODIES (..contd)

Friday, June 13th, 2008

Sanitary Ware Body:
Sanitary Ware also belongs to Earthenware group. Originally Sanitary Ware was prepared out of a porous earthenware body and fired at 1150oC. The body was very porous and absorbed lot of moisture and became unhygienic during usage. This has put lot of pressure on the Sanitary Ware manufacturers and further developments took […]

Electrical Porcelain Body (..contd):
The raw materials like Clays are blunged separately, the non-plastic materials like Feldspar, Quartz and Talc are dry ground or wet ground. The plastic clays and the non-plastic ground materials are mixed together to prepare a liquid slurry. This slurry is then passed through sieves and magnets and stored in storage […]

Electrical Porcelain Body:
A typical Electrical Porcelain Earthenware Body for making low tension insulator normally will have the following recipe:
Ball Clay – 20%
China Clay – 20%
Quartz – 30%
Feldspar – 20%
Talc – 10%
The high tension body will have the following recipe:
Ball Clay – 30%
China Clay – 10%
Quartz – 30%
Feldspar – 30%
The low tension insulators such […]
