Sanitary Ware Body:
Sanitary Ware also belongs to Earthenware group. Originally Sanitary Ware was prepared out of a porous earthenware body and fired at 1150oC. The body was very porous and absorbed lot of moisture and became unhygienic during usage. This has put lot of pressure on the Sanitary Ware manufacturers and further developments took place. New formulations developed world wide to make a vitreous product. The new developments brought out a new body called vitreous china. However it continues to be under Earthenware group since the mother of vitreous china is Earthenware.
The following common recipe is used world wide for making vitreous china sanitary ware.
Ball Clay – 25%
China Clay – 25%
Feldspar – 30%
Quartz – 20%
However there were lot of new raw materials introduced depending upon the local availability. But the basic chemical composition never changed, retaining a silica percentage of around 65-70% in the final body composition.
