After drying the rough edges of the dried articles are removed and this process is called towing. Special dust hoods are used for this operation where in rotating wheels are provided. The operator places the article on the wheel and rotates by holding a pad of nylon which removes the seams or unwanted sharp edges.
This operation requires great skill for effective better output because unskilled towing can lead to breakage or chittered edges. Now a days this operation is fully mechanised and hence the dependancy on skilled labour has come down.
The advanced method in block making and mould making followed with pressure casting techniques has reduced the requirement in finishing operations. The advancement in the manufacturing process has simplified the requirement of towing operations since the products made out of the newer production process has got very minimum blemishes and hence needs very little efforts to remove those blemishes. The products as such comes out with superior surface finish.
