Throwing and Turning

Throwing and Turning is a special production technique used for making special articles. In this method the articles are made by throwing the plastic body on a potter’s wheel and subsequently finished in leather hard condition in a lathe by turning. This process is also used for making some cups where a ‘foot’ can not be made by a simple jolleying process. The article is jolleyed and finished by turning. There are automatic cup turning machines widely used across the world for making china cups and now a days the process is copied for making earthenware ceramic cups.

In the preparation of handles and spouts, in one operation sticking up operations are necessary and with these sponging operations are combined. It is a very special technique and needs lot of factors like uniform moisture in the body and the handles are spouts and the drying conditions etc. Some factories uses a special sticking slip made out of body additives like magnesium sulphate or similar flocculating agents.
