Shaping of tableware

The following methods are followed in shaping of tableware in earthenware industry.

1. Jolleying and jiggering
2. Casting
3. Plastic pressing
4. Throwing and turning
5. Automatic isostatic pressing

The most widely used methods across the world for making flat and hollow ware are jolleying and jiggering methods. The inside of the articles is made by a profile which goes down into the mould by jolleying process. This is used mostly for making hollow wares like cups.

In the jiggering method the back of the article is formed by a profile or roller and the face by the plaster mould. The moulds are made out of plaster and are held on a jigger head. The mould making techniques place major role in this process to have a better product free from defects. The skill of the operator is very important and it needs quite a long time for a operator to learn the operation.
