Necessity is the mother of invention. For the early man his main requirement was food and in the beginning he started by eating raw food. Over a period of time he realised food was better when eaten cooked. He was constantly innovating ways to cook his food and came up with the technique of making vessels out of clay. He first used the plastic clay from earth and made vessels of different shapes.
In the beginning he mixed clay with water and shaped the mixed clay mass into different vessels and sun dried them in direct sunlight and heat. Although his vessels attained the required shape, they did not last long and was tending to break very soon because it was weak mechanically.
During an accidental forest fire, the vessels got fired accidentally and to his surprise, all those vessels that were weak and prone to breakage suddenly turned out to be very strong materials. Actually they attained reasonable mechanical strength and lasted for many days - THUS the first invention of Pottery (Fired Clay) ceramic material came into existence.
